Winter Walks at Ward Pound Ridge: Exploring Westchester’s Quiet Trails
Walking around Ward Pound Ridge Reservation during the winter weekday off-season is one of my favorite ways to get outside, slow down, and enjoy nature without the usual crowds. Milo and I spend a lot of time out here—following the rivers, walking the banks, and exploring the quiet corners of the park that feel almost untouched.
I grew up visiting Ward Pound Ridge. My father used to bring us here for barbecues, and it’s amazing how much of the park still looks and feels the same. Sure, some of the pathways have been paved over the years, but overall it remains the Ward Pound Ridge I remember from childhood.
Walking the Trails and Rivers at Ward Pound Ridge
Living in New Rochelle, we didn’t have many places like this. Now, when I head out with Milo, we can easily clock a few miles just wandering. The trails wind through open fields, wooded sections, and along flowing streams—perfect for anyone who wants a peaceful, scenic walk.

Campgrounds and Overnight Stays
I’ve never camped overnight at Ward Pound Ridge, but it’s absolutely allowed. The park has several designated camping areas, fire pits, and open spaces for groups or individuals. During my walk on the day I filmed the video, I explored the campgrounds—they’re well laid out, clean, and offer a mix of larger sites and smaller, more tucked-away areas.
Campsites include:
- Kimberley Bridge
- Pell Hill
- Michigan Road
- Meadow
- Burgefield
- Leatherman’s Loop
- Indian Rock
Permits are required. Rates are approximately $35 per night with a Westchester County Park Pass and around $50 per night without one. The Park Pass runs about $100 but can save you money if you visit often or plan multiple camping trips. More information is available here:

Wildlife and Natural Surroundings
One thing about Ward Pound Ridge is that the park encourages visitors to stay aware of local wildlife. Westchester County does have black bears in areas like Katonah and Lewisboro, and coyotes can be heard at night across much of the county. Deer, hawks, owls, foxes, and even bald eagles make appearances throughout the year, which adds to the experience of being out in the open and surrounded by nature.
A Few Hours Well Spent
Whether you’re hiking, walking along the rivers, exploring the campgrounds, or simply taking in the quiet, Ward Pound Ridge offers something timeless. Every season feels different, but the winter weekday off-season has a peacefulness that’s hard to beat. If you’re looking for a place to explore in Westchester County, it’s worth putting on your list.
