Should I call the building department before beginning a renovation?
Yes. Permit and zoning requirements vary by municipality and project. Contact the building department that has jurisdiction over the property before work begins.
Is the assessor the same as the tax collector?
No. The assessor determines and maintains the property’s assessed value and inventory. A tax receiver or tax collector generally prepares, sends and collects tax bills.
Which assessor handles a Village of Mamaroneck property?
It depends on where the parcel is located. Village properties are assessed by either the Town of Mamaroneck or Town of Rye because the Village discontinued its own assessing function in 2014.
Are the City of Rye and Town of Rye the same municipality?
No. The City of Rye maintains its own Building Department and Assessor. The Town of Rye Assessment Office serves Port Chester, Rye Brook and the Rye Neck portion of the Village of Mamaroneck.
Which municipal offices serve Katonah?
Katonah is a hamlet in the Town of Bedford, so its building permits and property assessments are handled by the Town of Bedford.
